There will be no practice 3/13-3/22 as I will be out of town. The players are challenging on their own odd numbers up. The players need to email me the results of their match that they are scheduling amongst themselves at any time at any location they find.

Also, players need to research an area of their game they want to improve upon and write a brief (1 page) paper on what they researched and how they can start to improve. Here is a link that might be helpful: http://tennis.com/yourgame/index.aspx

The players can take it a step further and consult with a professional, a teammate, or their parent to work on this skill.

Go Trojans, I'll see everyone on Monday 3/23 as we prepare for 3 matches!

Northwestern Secures First Win of Season Against Rival South Pointe

We met as a team before our home match against South Pointe to go over a few things about match day. I may have come across as harsh, but the result was a solid all around performance by the Trojans tonight.

An improved South Pointe team came to our courts ready to play. Their lineup is slightly different than what we faced last season as some of their players clearly have put some time in on improving their game.

Our first victory of the night came courtesy of Seth Russell at 1 singles. Seth led from beginning to the end and finished off his opponent in straight sets.

Our next match to finish was Tyler Leonard at 5 singles. After a close first set, Tyler steamrolled through the second set to claim line 5 for our second win.

We then dropped 2 & 3 singles as South Pointe seemed to be gaining momentum. Both Drayton Wade, at 2, and Brian Fitzpatrick, at 3, put up strong battles but fell in straight sets.

Our 2 doubles team got off to a relatively slow start. Jordan Beaver and Jonathan Clark pulled out a close first set 6-4. The second set was handled in dominating fashion as they claimed our third line of the night.

Hunter Love was the man on the spot for us tonight. After a close first set that Hunter claimed in a set tiebreak 8-6, the race was on as Hunter put his opponent away 6-0 in the second. The game ball of the night went to Hunter for his clutch performance.

In reserve action, we swept across the board. We received singles wins from Chris Cassidy, Jacob Page and Key Barkley. Teaming up for doubles wins were the teams of Duncan Foy & Alex Antezana, Jonathan Patton & Ahmad Sheffield, and Collins Mauldin & Michael Baldwin.

We'll have practice tomorrow as normally scheduled. The rules that I went over will be in force throughout the rest of the season. I am sending a Word Document to everyone so they have my expectations in writing. They are relatively simple rules - show up, have a good attitude, work hard, and you will be rewarded with playing time.

Go Trojans!

Falcons take down Trojans in Season Opener

Nation Ford came ready to play today. Their varsity lineup, from top to bottom, had us running from the get go. While we could hang our heads and be disappointed with the lopsided loss, I'd rather us take it as a lesson on what hard work can do.

Last year, we handled Nation Ford easily both times we played. According to their coach and some parents I talked to after the match, their team is a close knit group of kids. Most of them traveled to tennis camp together this summer and remained close last summer and over the fall. Their team chemistry was undeniable.

Aside from the 0-7 loss, we had some highlights on the reserve courts. We won nearly all of those matches which shows that our team is deep. Congrats to Duncan Foy, Michael Baldwin, Alex Antezana, Jonathan Patton, and Ahmad Sheffield on singles wins. Collins Mauldin & Key Brakley also teamed up for a doubles win.

We have South Pointe tomorrow at home. Let's get motivated to get a win against our cross town rival.

Go Trojans!
