10th ranked Clover sweeps Trojans

We ventured over to Clover for our 9th region match of the year. Clover, being the region first place team, provided a formidable opponent for us. We held our ground at most lines, but suffered a 6-0 defeat to the Eagles. We stand at 7-9 overall at this point and are 3-6 in our region matches.

Our 1 and 2 singles players ran into a couple buzzsaws from Clover. Both Chandler Green and Maggie Orr fought as hard as they could, but simply couldn't overcome the Eagle opponents they faced.

At 3 singles, Brittany Whitrock played neck and neck with her opponent. Both sets were a few bounces from going either way, but in the end she came up short in each by score of 6-3, 6-3.

At 4 singles, Ruth Anne Burnette played a fiery little opponent from Clover. After overcoming some struggles in the first set, Ruth Anne was even with her opponent to 6-5 in the second set. Unfortunately the last set was decided for Clover and Ruth Anne dropped a hard fought match 6-3, 7-5.

Joanna Kohn played an Eagle opponent that played passionately on her senior night. Both sets played fairly even back and forth, but we were unable to capitalize on this line as well and fell 6-4, 6-3.

Our 2 doubles experiment of Team Cox proved partially successful. Lauren and Courtney Cox struggled early on, but came roaring back in the second set and ended up forcing a tiebreak. The tiebreak started off even, but the Cox girls were unable to hang on and suffered a heartbreaker by score of 6-1, 3-6, 10-4 to Clover.

With the match in hand for Clover, we put Brittany and Maggie on at 1 doubles to play a proset for the 1 doubles line. Unfortunately, due to darkness and Clover's lighting issues, we were unable to finish the proset out for safety reasons.

We'll host York on Thursday in our last region match. We need to secure a win to have a shot at claiming the 4th spot in the playoffs that start in 2 weeks. Thursday will be our last match for JV players as we will travel the varsity over to Spartanburg next Monday and hopefully be practicing all week to prepare for our first round playoff match.
